Lymphatic Massage

Thank you for choosing Belle Medical and our providers as your partner for fat removal.  We want to do all we can to help you maximize your results and to help your body heal as quickly as possible. Lymphatic Massage is a key part of the post-op process. We hope this is a helpful and educational tool for massage.

Light Pressure Massage

Lymphatic massage uses very light pressure. The lymphatic system is near the outer layer of skin, and only needs five ounces of pressure to be accessed - that's the equivalent of placing a nickel on the skin. When massaging, use light pressure, not deep tissue. Imagine light brushing or tickling of the skin. Different areas will determine what direction you will be massaging.

The Lymphatic System

The purpose of lymphatic massage after your procedure is to stimulate the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system is in charge of removing toxins, fluid, and waste from the body. The lymphatic system needs to be "turned on" in order to remove toxins and fluid from the body. We turn on this system by massaging, walking, and light exercise of the body.

FAQs

  • Why do I need to wear the compression/what is the compression garment for?
Once the procedure is done, the fat that separated the skin and the muscular wall is no longer there, leaving the skin to hang loose from the body. The compression garment is the key to having that now loose skin adhere to the muscle wall.
  • Why can't I swim/sit in a hot tub/use the sauna/tan for two weeks following treatment?
We want your addit sites to heal properly and in order to mitigate any possible risk of infection, we ask that you don’t submerge your body in any water or expose those sites too early.
  • Why can’t I drink alcohol for 1 week or smoke for 2 weeks following treatment?
Alcohol and smoking slows the recovery process down tremendously.
  • What is the importance of the post-treatment massages?
Getting that massage as soon as the soreness in your body is starting to dissipate is essential to the healing process. The massage helps spread those white blood cells that tend to collect in specific areas so that they don’t become hard and agitated.
  • Why can’t I use Ibuprofen, Vitamin E, or NSAIDs following treatment?
These tend to thin your blood and we want to alleviate any risk for heavy bleeding.
  • Why can’t I drink coffee/caffeine before treatment?
The caffeine in coffee stimulates receptors located in cells within your heart to increase your heart rate. Effects of this stimulation speed up your blood flow because of an increase in heart rate, as well as an increase in blood sugar, urine production and body temperature.
  • What is the purpose of sleeping in an inclined position for 4-8 hours immediately following treatment?
Keeps the blood more confined in the compressed area so that you are less likely to get dizzy and faint.
  • When can I do physical activity? Can I take my compression garment off for physical activity?
You can return to full regular physical activity 10 days post treatment. We encourage you to walk or use a stationary bicycle during that 10 day period but really, nothing more strenuous than that. We just don’t want you to participate in activities too soon to help your recovery process be as quick and painless as possible. Compression will need to stay on for all physical activity for the first 30 days.
  • When do I get my massage? How often should I get a massage?
Typically we want our patients to get their first massage about 1-3 days after their treatment. However, throughout the healing process, we suggest they get anywhere between 3-4 massages. You will receive a massage at each of your post-op appointments. You should be massaging at home 3 times daily.
  • Why am I bigger today than before I had treatment? OR Is this much swelling normal? (1-3 and 7-10 day Post-Op)
Swelling is to be expected immediately following treatment and typically lasts about 10 days while getting better daily until that 10 days has been reached. Additionally, a significant amount of fluid has been placed into your body which may make you look larger. It will only take a couple days before you begin to lose inches and see a drastic difference in your body. Most of the fluid should be gone by the 30 day Post-Op, so if you maintain following the Post-Op instructions, you will see a loss in inches by then.
  • Should I be concerned about the swelling in the pubic area and ankles?
Swelling in the pubic area and ankles occurs as the residual fluid is gravitationally pulled to the lowest points of the body, where it will ultimately be absorbed with the rest of the fluid and although uncomfortable, it is completely normal. This should subside within a few days with proper massaging and regular exercise. Sometimes it does not drain completely and collects in that area where eventually it will expel as urine.
  • Certain areas of my body have hard knots while others are more smooth. What can be done about this?
These knots are a positive indication of healing as white blood cells tend to congregate around areas of inflammation. You can promote the breakdown of the collection by drinking a sufficient amount of water and thoroughly massaging the area each day and getting your lymphatic massages. That lymphatic massage will really help with those hard spots as well.
  • Why do the areas treated feel numb and tingly?
The numbing effect of the lidocaine used in treatment can persist from several weeks to several months post treatment and is completely normal. When the cannula hits a nerve ending it tends to numb the nerve ending for a couple of weeks. This is typically normal with most patients. Nerve endings very commonly don’t regain ‘feeling’ until 60-90 days post-op. Sometimes the feeling even lasts up to 6 months. It is completely normal and nothing to worry about.
  • There is a yellow swollen area on my midsection. What can be done about this?
This yellowing could be a result of the compression garment bunching in that area. If you are pretty sedentary on a regular basis, adjust the straps so that nothing is bunching the skin every time you sit down.
